How to Organize Your Jewelry Box
Jewelry boxes are a great way to keep your treasured items safe and in good condition. Regardless of how often you wear jewelry, jewelry boxes are usually a necessity when trying to stay organized. Although most women have jewelry boxes, very few of us utilize them to their full potential. With a few helpful tips, jewelry boxes can become organized and ultimately make finding that cherished piece of jewelry easier.
The first thing you should try to do when organizing your jewelry box is to make sure that it is big enough to accommodate the amount, size, and type of jewelry that you have. Or, you have enough jewelry boxes to actually store all of your jewelry. If the size of your jewelry box is too small to handle your jewelry, good organization will be difficult to achieve. Before you jump right in, you should also make sure that your jewelry box has a fabric lining. This prevents unnecessary scratching of your jewelry.
The next task you should do when organizing your jewelry box is to separate your jewelry by type. You should have a section of rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, as well as a miscellaneous section. During the separation process, be sure to find pairs for each of your earrings, and throw out any earrings that have lost their pair. If you come across any broken jewelry, either bring it in to get fixed or throw them away as well. You should also have a section for miscellaneous jewelry, such as broaches and pins. Separating your jewelry out will help you see how your jewelry will fit into your jewelry box or boxes. However, you should also separate the jewelry that you wear everyday and the any heirlooms, sentimental, and expensive items.
Once you have your jewelry in sections you should able to see if you will need a bigger jewelry box, and then you can get an idea of the type of jewelry box organizers or dividers that you may need. This will depend greatly on the type of jewelry that you have. For example, your necklaces will usually require more space in your jewelry box than rings.
Next make sure your jewelry is clean before placing into your jewelry box. You need to clean your jewelry carefully, making sure that nothing is damaged. You should also make sure that your jewelry box is clean and dust free, especially if you have had it for a while.
When organizing your jewelry box start with your necklaces. Necklaces are usually the biggest jewelry items that you may have. In order to organize your jewelry box, start with the section of your jewelry box that is big enough to hold your necklaces. Necklaces should be laid in your jewelry box carefully. You do not want to simply lay necklaces in your jewelry haphazardly. Careful placement of necklaces will prevent unwanted kinks in chains and tangling.
You can you use the box’s smaller compartments for earrings and rings. But make sure the compartments are big enough to hold the amount of earring and rings that you have. Even though these items are small, you should still refrain from cramming them into your jewelry box.
A deep yet medium sized compartment should be used for your miscellaneous items. Typically these items have odd shapes to them and often have clasps in the back. The space is needed to prevent cramming and to keep these items from being damaged.
Set aside a compartment that is just for your everyday jewelry. This compartment should be easily accessible, but able to hold what all of the jewelry that you may wear daily. You may even consider using the hooks for your everyday jewelry if your jewelry box comes equipped with this feature.
Some jewelry boxes have secret compartments, false tops, or hollow drawers. These are great places for your expensive jewelry and your sentimental pieces. However, you may even consider a trick jewelry box. These are jewelry boxes that are designed to look like something else. Popular objects for trick jewelry boxes include cleaning bottles and books.
If there are other valuables that you have that do not fit into any of the above categories such as costume jewelry, charms, and chokers, they should be considered last when you are organizing. These items should be considered last because they are typically the least expensive and easiest to replace. However, if you have the room, your costume jewelry should be separated from other items and placed within your jewelry box.
Your jewelry box is meant to keep your jewelry safe from the everyday day wear and tear. If you have your jewelry crammed in your jewelry box there is a chance that it may be doing more harm than good. If you keep your jewelry box organized, you will be keeping your jewelry looking vibrant for years to come.
